Pandemic, Taiwan, and Re-Launch (SRM Update)

Life, and ministry, has continued in Taiwan unabated. I’m wholly unworthy of this blessing from the Lord.

The news we get from around the world is both alarming and saddening. Whole countries shutting down and entire cities going into lockdown make this seem like the beginning of a disaster movie. However, it’s not. It’s real. Despite the loss of life, loss of livelihood, and loss of normalcy that countless people are experiencing there is an even greater tragedy unfolding before us: the pausing of mission work.

As Christians we believe that all will one day stand before the Lord and give an account for all they have done in open rebellion against Him. The only way to satisfy the righteous demands placed upon us by the Father is the atoning blood of the Son. The only way to receive the grace of Jesus Christ is to call upon His Name for salvation. The only way to call upon His Name is to know it. To know it someone must be told of it. (Romans 10:13-15)

This pandemic has caused fear to grip the hearts of many, including missionaries. The work must go on. There are almost 2 billion (yes, BILLION) people who have no access to the Gospel and have never heard the name of Jesus. We cannot let that stand. Despite the pandemic, I’m more resolved than ever to dedicate my life to the furthering of the Gospel along the Silk Road!

That being said, things here have gone really well. Life, and ministry, has continued in Taiwan unabated. I’m wholly unworthy of this blessing from the Lord. Our church is still meeting, Bible study is still happening, my school is still operating and meeting in person, and pretty much everything is still open and operating as normal. Yes, there are social distancing guidelines in place and we’re required to wear masks on all public transport including taxis. Still, that is a much much lower price to pay compared to other parts of the world. Taiwan is praying for you. Taiwan can help!

I’m entering into the final year of my teaching contract here. It’s a crossroad. Either renew in December or choose to move on. Those are my choices.

On one hand, life here in Taiwan is amazing. Comfortable and free. I feel neither the desire to leave nor the pressure to do so. in fact, when I think of leaving my heart aches a little. If you had asked me if I was going to fall in love with Taiwan the answer would have been a resounding no. This was always supposed to be a short term externship. Still Taiwan has impressed itself upon my heart.

Yet, on the other hand, I cannot deny the call of the Lord. I have a deep peace about leaving and moving on to the next stage. I’m concerned about safety, loneliness, and the difficulties ahead but I also know the God whom I serve. He will not fail to provide for me. This I know. So, with confidence in the Lord and a little afraid, I move on.

This is the soft re-launch of Silk Road Mission. I’ve recently been approved by a mission service agency. This means that all donations to my work will now be Tax Deductible. Praise God!

Going forward, there will be regular updates and fundraising. My hope is to be on the field full time starting Summer 2021! Will you join me in God’s mission to the people of the Silk Road? Click the “Donate Now” button at the top of the page. It will take you to my donation page at Mission Quest (our service agency). Follow the instructions from there.

That’s all for now travelers! See you later!
